SSEN reconnects final homes following Storm Austen and Storm Boelo power cuts
Households left without electricity following recent severe weather can now access support and compensation if they faced extended power outages.

Key points
- Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks has restored power to the final customers affected by Storm Austen and Storm Boelo.
- Customers without power for over 12 hours can claim £30 per person for every 24 hours spent without electricity.
- Anyone still experiencing an isolated power loss should report it by calling the freephone 105 number immediately.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) announced that it has reconnected the last of its customers in central southern England who lost electricity supplies due to Storm Austen. Engineers worked through high winds and heavy rain to repair network damage caused since the storm arrived on Friday afternoon.
The supplier confirmed that by the evening of Monday 26 October, it had restored power to over 62,000 customers affected by both Storm Austen and the subsequent Storm Boelo. The company has now returned to standard operations while continuing to monitor the network for any remaining issues.
How to claim compensation
If your power supply was interrupted for longer than 12 hours, you are entitled to claim costs for food and drink. The compensation is set at £30 per person for every 24-hour period without electricity. To make a claim, you should email [email protected] with your details. SSEN states that it will confirm the reimbursement and process the payment via cheque.

Reporting ongoing problems
While the main restoration effort is complete, SSEN advises that some households may still face very localised issues that are not visible on central systems. If you are still without power and have not been contacted by the network operator, you are encouraged to report your fault by calling the freephone 105 number. You should also use this number to report any damaged electrical equipment, ensuring you stay well away from it.
What it means for you
- If you were without power for more than 12 hours, check your food and drink receipts to prepare a claim for reimbursement.
- Ensure you have the 105 emergency power cut number saved in your phone to report future supply issues or damaged equipment.
- Consider registering for Priority Services if a power cut is particularly difficult for your household; this support is free of charge.
