Key points

  • Weekend Happy Hours are extended until 14 February 2027, with a new token system taking effect from 1 November 2026.
  • Customers earn tokens by participating in Saving Sessions, which are then exchanged to unlock free electricity hours.
  • Users need a working electricity smart meter and must be registered for Saving Sessions to participate in the scheme.

Octopus Energy has announced the continuation of its Weekend Happy Hours scheme, which will now run until 14 February 2027. This initiative offers eligible customers the opportunity to access free electricity during designated weekend periods.

From 1 November 2026, the company is changing how these hours are accessed by introducing a token-based system. Participants will need to earn tokens through the firm’s existing grid-balancing programme to secure their sessions.

How the new token system works

Under the new rules, customers earn one token for every successful Saving Session they take part in. These tokens can then be exchanged for a Happy Hour. Octopus says it will try to keep the rate at two tokens for one Happy Hour, but on a high-priced weekend it might take three or more.

Tokens can be banked for future use but will expire on 14 February 2027. On a really bad weekend, such as a cold snap, Octopus says it may have to skip Happy Hours, but only as a last resort.

Changes to scheduling and existing hours

The company is also introducing more flexible booking windows, which may occasionally include Saturday sessions or times outside the standard 11am to 3pm slot. Customers currently holding banked hours should note that two must be used before November to avoid them being removed.

Any additional banked hours held beyond this limit will be converted into tokens that carry over into November.

What it means for you

  • Ensure you have a working electricity smart meter and are signed up to the Saving Sessions programme to remain eligible.
  • Check your current bank of hours before 1 November, as two must be used immediately to prevent them from being wiped.
  • Prepare for the requirement to earn tokens through Saving Sessions to continue accessing free power during the winter months.
